For a school of art to properly fulfill it's function, a viable space to exhibit artwork of students, faculty and visiting artists is crucial. It is imperative that this space follows professional models as closely as possible. The following minimum standards are recommended in the establishment or upgrade of art exhibition spaces.

Facility

1. Designated space. The gallery should be a single function space capable of being secured.
2. The space should be as large as possible in order to accommodate large-scale work.
3. Lighting. Light of sufficient brightness and color, preferably track lighting for flexibility in direction. Standard florescent bulbs are not acceptable for the illumination of artwork.
4. Walls. Walls should be neutral and clean, free of clutter, easily mended, and capable of holding various weights.
5. Floors. Floors should be neutral and clean, free of clutter, easily cleanable and able to withstand heavy loads.
6. Storage. A storage area for pedestals, mounting materials, preparation, collections, etc.

Coordinator/Director

The gallery should be administered by a coordinator/director who is responsible the gallery program including; scheduling, curating (where applicable), publicity, mounting and striking, shipping etc.It should be recognized that the role of gallery coordinator is a comprehensive task. If a faculty member serves this function, release time from teaching or a stipend for this duty is appropriate.

Budget

The budget of various exhibition programs will vary widely from school to school depending on the scope of the program and the resources of each institution. Minimum costs incurred in exhibiting artwork including: announcements, receptions, facility upkeep, display materials, shipping, insurance, etc. Artist lecture programs in conjunction with exhibitions are highly desirable.
